A-B PERSONALITY, AUTHORITARIANISM AND CORONARY HEART DISEASE: A correction

John J. Ray

During some recent reanalyses of the data used in Ray & Simons (1982), some minor data-processing errors in the original analyses were found. The errors do not affect the major conclusions in Ray & Simons (1982). The full, revised correlation matrix is given below.

Table 1. Correlations of personality and demographic variables with CHD incidence among a sample of 313 Australians. (Correlations significant < 0.05 are starred.)

......................................2.........3...........4............5............6...........7.......8 (h)

1. Freneticism (a).......0.10....0.16*.....0.17*.....0.41*....-0.21*....0.16*....0.05
2. Achievement motive (b)....0.51*....0.46*......0.48*....-0.05.....-0-34*....0.07
3. Authoritarianism (c)........................0.40*......0.30*....0.02.....-0.28*....0.19*
4. 'A-B' (d).........................................................0.25*...-0.15*...-0.22*....0.06
5. 'A-B' (e).....................................................................-0.16*...-0.14*...-0.02
6. Age (f).....................................................................................0.01.....0.49*
7. Sex (g)...............................................................................................-0.07

Note:
(a) Scored so that frenetic people get a high score.
(b) Ambitious people get a high score.
(c) Authoritarians (directive people) get a high score.
(d) As measured by an 18-item form of the Jenkins Activity Survey. 'A' types score high.
(e) As measured by the 'Framingham' instrument by Scotch & Levine (Haynes, Levine, Scotch, Feinleib & Kannel, 1978). 'A' types score high.
(f) In years.
(g) Scored: 1 = Male, 2 = Female.
(h) Scored: 1 = Coronary heart disease sufferer, 0 = Control.
